Poulpharm has the necessary facilities for carrying out post-mortem examinations. In consultation with experienced veterinarians, the appropriate samples are taken for pathological diagnosis.

Another key tool for evaluating animal health and welfare is blood biochemistry. By analysing a wide range of enzymes, metabolites, proteins, electrolytes, and hormones present in serum or plasma, we obtain valuable insights into the functional status of different organs and physiological systems. This provides a dynamic snapshot of internal metabolic processes and supports clinical diagnosis, health monitoring, and research applications.

If you would like to submit a sample for biochemical analysis, there are two options:

Option 1: Sampling by Poulpharm

Contact one of our species specialists to arrange sampling from the animal(s) of interest. Our team can advise on study design, sampling strategy, and pre-analytical requirements to ensure optimal data quality.

Option 2: Send Your Sample Directly

Submit a completed request form (insert link) together with:

  • Whole blood collected in a lithium heparin tube (green cap), or
  • Plasma obtained from lithium heparin blood

The required sample volume depends on the number of analytes requested. Therefore, we recommend contacting the Department Manager prior to submission to confirm the exact volume needed for your study.

 

Sample Requirements

To ensure high-quality and reliable results:

  • Fresh samples are strongly recommended.
  • If immediate analysis is not possible, samples should be centrifuged and plasma stored at 2–8°C or at -20°.
  • Samples should be shipped to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Ensure proper labelling and secure packaging to prevent leakage or transport damage.

At Poulpharm, our Haematology Department combines advanced technology with expert interpretation to provide accurate and reliable blood analyses for animal health assessment, disease diagnosis, monitoring, and research applications.

While we have extensive expertise in poultry and swine diagnostics, our haematology services are also available for companion animals, including dogs and cats, as well as cattle, horses, rabbits, reptiles, and other exotic or less common species.

Haematology is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating an animal’s overall health status, detecting infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, and haematological disorders, and monitoring disease progression, treatment response, and performance in both clinical and research settings.

 

Advanced Solutions for Avian and Reptile Haematology

One of the major challenges in avian and reptile haematology is the presence of nucleated red blood cells, which can interfere with conventional automated blood cell counting methods. To overcome this limitation, Poulpharm utilizes specialized analytical equipment capable of accurately distinguishing red blood cells from white blood cells, ensuring precise and reliable cell counts.

For white blood cell differential analysis, we employ automated blood smear preparation technology that produces high-quality, standardized smears while minimizing artefacts, cell clumping, and sample variability. These smears are subsequently evaluated by experienced laboratory professionals, combining the advantages of automation with expert microscopic assessment.

Comprehensive Haematological Profile

By integrating advanced instrumentation with professional morphological evaluation, Poulpharm offers a complete haematological profile that includes:

If you would like to submit a blood sample for haematological analysis, there are two options:

Option 1: Sampling by Poulpharm

Contact one of our species specialists to arrange blood collection from the animal(s) of interest. Our team can provide guidance on sampling procedures, sample handling, and test selection to ensure optimal results.

Option 2: Send Your Sample Directly

Submit a minimum of 500 µL of whole blood collected in an EDTA tube (purple cap) together with the completed request form (insert link).

Sample Requirements

To ensure the highest analytical quality, fresh blood samples are preferred. If immediate shipment is not possible:

  • Store samples refrigerated at 2–8°C.
  • Samples should reach the laboratory within 48 hours of collection.
  • Do not freeze whole blood samples.
  • To prevent clot formation, gently invert the tube several times immediately after collection and again before shipment.
  • Ensure that samples are correctly labelled and packaged to avoid transport-related damage.

All analyses can be performed according to European guidelines (EFSA 2017;15(10):5021) for Target Animal Safety trials to support your registration dossier or according to your requirements.
